Love Promise Story - Meet Brandy - Karen K
Our love promise story introduces Brandi a mixed breed Sharpei/Shepard female. Brandy’s journey began with PAWS in November 2019 when we answered a complaint about “a lot” of dogs living in two houses on Page Hollow Rd in Pittsfield, PA. When we investigated the complaint, we found 22 dogs in one house and 24 dogs in another house. Brandy, one of the 24 was being cared for by one man. The number of dogs was overwhelming. The conditions in the homes were horrific with urine and feces all over. There were dogs everywhere running around frightened and terrified of seeing new people. The dogs were in a pack situation, and each tried to survive by fighting to get some of the food the owner threw on the floor. Of course, there were fights for food and dominance over each other. The females were constantly being attacked and bred by the males. Brandy’s face shows many scars she had to endure. The owner did not spay or neuter any dog he owned. We found a new litter of pups during our seizure. Paws decided it was best to remove all the dogs from the two properties. The first day we spent six hours removing most of the dogs from the homes. This involved 8 staff and the police. The dogs had never had a leash on or had been touched by people. They were traumatized and scared. We had to carry each individual dog out to crates for transport. We were unable to catch all the dogs and had to return a second time. We spent nearly 4 hours with the help of 5 humane society staff and police to remove the remaining dogs. Each trip to remove animals required a search warrant to be served and involved local law enforcement. The owner decided to relinquish all but 14 dogs to PAWS after a week. He wanted the 14 dogs he chose to be returned to him. As per PA law, we had to hold them until a court case could be scheduled and a determination by the court was reached. Nearly 10 months passed before the remaining dogs were relinquished, however another year passed before the case was completed. The veterinary care and restitution totaled $42,000 and the owner was charged with cruelty to animals for failure to provide food, water, sanitary shelter, and veterinary care for the dogs. PAWS had to pay for all the care of all 46 dogs. The owner finally pled guilty and was ordered to pay restitution. The owner pays PAWS $50.00 per month toward his $42,000 bill. The case took over 2 years to be decided. Brandy remains traumatized to this day from her experience and is afraid of loud sounds and quick movements. We consider her a special needs dog due to her background and her behavior traits we view. She does connect with our staff on a limited basis. She is most comfortable in her cage where she feels safe. We have a family that would like to foster her and provide her with a home environment so she can begin healing. She does not trust humans or new things coming to her, so there will be many challenges. After nearly 4 years being at PAWS, she is the last of the 46 Page Hollow dogs at PAWS. Her sweet nature and her strong will to keep going forward have kept us committed to finding her a new home. We will send her on her way with many blessings for her to succeed. We are supported by our local Subaru Dealership in Warren, PA. Sean Ellsworth, the local Subaru Dealership manager, is always open to new ideas about our events.
